Pat McCarthy
Taught elementary school for 30
years, so she have a pretty good idea
of what kids like and what they can
read at different levels. Pat has 14
books published, all for kids. But is
most excited about my new book,
Heading West: Life with the Pioneers,
from Chicago Review Press. That’s
because it will be the first book that is
sold in bookstores. All the other books
were for schools and libraries.
Pat wanted to write a book about the
life of Laura Ingalls Wilder, who wrote
Little House on the Prairie. Her editor
thought if she made it about all
pioneers, it would sell better, so she
did that. Pat's book is nonfiction, which
means everything in it is true. She had
to do a lot of research to find all the
facts she needed. It was fun to learn all
about pioneers. Pat read lots of
diaries, journals and letters that the
pioneers wrote. That was so
interesting. When she had all the facts,
it was time to start writing. Of course,
Pat couldn’t use everything she had
read. She tried to pick out things that
would be interesting to kids. When she
quoted things the pioneers had written,
she paid special attention to what the
pioneer kids had to say. Pat knew kids
would be interested in that. Her book
tells about how the West was explored
and the men who blazed the trails. It
tells about the trip West by train, boat,
on foot, but mostly by covered wagon.
A chapter tells about the kinds of
homes pioneers had and how they
built them. Another chapter tells about
pioneer communities. Then there are
chapters about pioneer men, pioneer
women, and pioneer children. The end
of the book tells about the end of the
pioneer era. The book also has 21
activities for kids to do with their
parents. You can learn to make butter,
play pioneer games, make toys, and
lots of other fun things.

About Donny Bailey Seagraves
Donny Bailey Seagraves is the author
of GONE FROM THESE WOODS, her
debut children's middle novel from
Random House, Delacorte Press. The
official publication date is August 25,
2009. Donny is a native of Athens,
Georgia and is a longtime resident of
the nearby small town, Winterville,
Georgia, population 1,150, give or
take a Wintervillian or two. She lives
there with her husband, Phillip. They
are the parents of grown twins. Donny
studied journalism at the University of
Georgia, was a newspaper columnist
and freelance writer for many years,
and owned and operated a used and
rare book business, Junebug Books,
for ten years. Gone From These
Woods is Seagraves' first published
novel.

About GONE FROM THESE WOODS,
ISBN: 978-0-385-73629-9, Children's
Middle Grade Novel and also is on the
Random House Teen site, so is also
suitable for young adults.
GONE FROM THIS WOODS is the
story of young Daniel Sartain, a boy
who has just turned 11. Daniel lives in
a fictional small town, Newtonville, in
rural North Georgia. The town in the
book is similar to Winterville, where I
live, and is surrounded by woods. I got
the idea for this story from a real-life
story that happened in the family of my
second grade teacher. But that was
just the spark or jumping off place for
my fictional story. An interesting fact
about my novel is that the story is told
by the 11-year-old boy and I am a
middle-aged woman. It was hard to tell
the story this way but I wanted to really
get inside this boy's story and used the
"what if" question to imagine myself in
his place.
My book isn't officially out yet, but it
has a couple of early reviews. Here are
excerpts from these:
"There is a lot of complexity in this
short, quiet coming-of-age novel.
Sensitive younger readers will be
drawn in by Daniel’s story, which can
be likened to a more emotional twin of
Gary Paulsen’s Hatchet."--Booklist
"This satisfactory debut novel depicts
a realistic portrayal of grief from a
youth’s perspective. Middle-grade
boys will take interest in Danny’s
internal superhero-vs.-villain battle and
rally around him when he finds the
strength to stand up to his father."--
Kirkus
Here's the blurb from the book: "I didn't
want to go rabbit hunting with Uncle
Clay on that cold November morning.
But I went. Now I have to live with what
happened for the rest of my life. It was
just an accident. A careless accident.
The rabbit ran away. Clay fell beside
me. But he wasn't dead. Clay couldn't
be dead."
Nothing has been the same for eleven-
year-old Daniel Sartain since that
morning in the woods when Uncle Clay
went down. Mom tries to hold the family
together with her comfort and love.
Mrs. Hardy, Daniel's guidance
counselor at school, offers a sanctuary
in her office as she tries to help Daniel
survive afater losing his role model
and best friend. At the same time,
Daniel's alcohlic father, Clay's older
brother, makes a tragic situation worse.
The memory of that cold morning in
the Georgia woods -- and most of all
the hurt -- will stay with Daniel forever.
But somehow, he must find a way to go
on . . . for Uncle Clay . . . and for
himself.
Donny Bailey Seagraves paints a
riveting portrait of a once brave and
confident boy struggling with the pain
and guilt of having taken a loved one's
life. As the spirit and love of Uncle Clay
resonate through the story, readers
are reassured tht Daniel will finally
move beyond his grief and make
peace with the past."

Beverly Stowe McClure
My name is Beverly Stowe McClure.
When I was a kid, I hated to read. Even
though my eighth-grade teacher sent
my poem "Stars" to a high school
anthology, and it was published in
Young America Sings, I hated to write.
In spite of my rocky relationship with
books, I attended the university, read a
lot, and graduated with a teaching
degree. Imagine that. Reading great
books to my students and to my sons
opened my eyes to what I'd been
missing: reading was fun. Now I read,
and I write for children and teens. And I
love it.
Rebel in Blue Jeans, my latest YA
novel, touches on the effects divorce
has on young people. Sixteen-year-old
Rebel Ferguson faces this problem
when her mother runs away with the
drummer in a rock band. As if she
doesn't have enough to deal with at
home, the Garret boys on the
neighboring ranch, who have been her
friends all her life, suddenly are
looking at her in a different way, and a
handsome college guy with a bad
reputation has taken an interest in her.
Rebel decides to do three things:
1. Bring her mother home where she
belongs.
2. Show the Garret boys she's not
interested in either of them, except as
friends.
3. Prove to the boys, and to herself,
that the college guy is a gentleman.
Nothing turns out the way Rebel plans,
however. If only people were as
trustworthy as her puppies, cat, and
horses.

she keeps a diary at her blog:

Rhyming picture book, "Rattlesnake
Jam,"
My riot of a tale tells about dear old
Gran and Pa, and their yen for rattlers.
Pa catches 'em, but the problem is that
Gran decides how they're cooked up -
Gran wants jam, but Pa yearns for
rattlesnake pie.
** The story works GREAT at getting
those reluctant readers to enjoy a
book.
This was a barrel of fun to write: I
confess, I giggled all the way through
it. And Kevin Scott Collier's illustrations
make the characters jump off the
page. Just what I would have drawn
myself, if I had a fraction of Kevin's
talent.
Guardian Angel Publishing published it
with tender loving care, as they do all
their books.

Velda Brotherton
I'm Velda Brotherton and I've been
writing for about 25 years. I write both
fiction and nonfiction, and enjoy them
both equally. I've had a total of ten
books published and am working on
two more under contract.
The only education I have comes from
experience. I learned to write from an
inner spirit and a great desire to share
my words with others.
My book, FLY WITH THE MOURNING
DOVE, is the biography of Edna Smith
Hiller. In 1921, when she was six years
old, she moved to a homestead in New
Mexico with her parents. She grew up
there on the high desert, and learned
to love the life. Until the age of 85 she
was a rancher and teacher, and
enjoyed taking long hikes and rides to
explore the Sangre de Cristo
Mountains. The book is written as
creative nonfiction, and explores her
life and beliefs in novel form, using
journals and diaries from her and her
mother. It was a finalist for creative
nonfiction in the 2008 WILLA Literary
Awards.

Biography: Fran Lewis
Born in the South Bronx, I grew up with
people from many ethnic backgrounds. I
learned to play and work with children in
my school that came from other
countries and different places.
I was always over weight as a child and
got picked on a lot by the other children
in my class and even my teachers. I
found it hard to do many of the sporting
activities that my sister and cousins
could do. I learned at an early age that
kids can be mean and I promised myself
that I would never retaliate or do mean
things to other kids in return.
When I decided to write my short stories
I realized that I had a lot to say about my
youth and in both of my books I tell
about a ten year old girl named Bertha
who learns to deal with real life issues
kids face today at home and in school. I
write reviews for other sites and I wrote
three children’s books and currently
writing one on Alzheimer’s Disease.
As an educator I the New York City
Public Schools for over 36 years, I
realized just how unique and precious
our children are. I was the reading and
writing staff developer in my school and
the dean. I loved the children and had
the respect of my fellow teachers and
parents.
Teaching children to read was really
very rewarding and introducing them to
writing and creating their own stories
was exciting for the students. I am a
member of WhosWho of America’s
Executives and Professionals as well as
a member of WhosWho of America’s
Teachers. I am the author of three
children’s books and my fourth entitled
Memories Are Precious: Alzheimer’s
Journey: Ruth’s Story will be out next
month. I am currently writing my fourth
Bertha Book and another book in a
different genre.

Linda Bryan Sabin
Linda is a born teacher and writer. She
does not dumb down books for
children and brings to readers a rich
tapestry of expression and discovery.
Rhythm, vibrant and multi-syllable
words are intended to instill a love of
language and restore it to its higher
purpose, the true art of
communication. The Peeking Kitty is
not a primary character in any of her
books, but he is a major feature in all
of them. He exemplifies the Spirit of her
writing. He represents the magic of
discovery and the quiet confidence
gained when you discover the power of
words. Peeking Kitty books are written
to stimulate imagination, curiosity,
expression and the joy of reading.
Linda says, “The love and use of real
words; is one of the looming casualties
of the 21st Century. Making a point as
quickly as possible seems to be the
only purpose of text-ing, twittering and
screen flashing sound bites. Truncated
language, acronyms and the loss of
the ever friendly vowel is eroding the
fabric of communication.” Linda
invites everyone to awaken their
creative spirit, to look at the world in an
unconventional ways and to discover
the joy of reading and learning.
Linda is an ex elementary school-
teacher and high energy personality.
This is the first of 6 titles currently in
the process of production/publication.
(See peekingkitty.com) An advocate
for conservation as well as the
economy, her books are “green” and
printed in the USA. As a new author,
she is making her way in the publishing
arena through extensive outreach in
the spirit of service and promotion of
literacy.
Her positive outlook and unique way of
making the ordinary extraordinary is
her strength. Her ability to use
alliteration and superb rhyme gives her
books an exceptional "readability"
quality for both children and adults.
She is an excellent speaker able to
engage large and small audiences.
Linda has a presentation for
elementary schools “How a Book
Grows Up” and is a strong advocate
for reading aloud and exposing
children to the power of words.
